In a bid to augment government efforts of combating the Covid-19 global pandemic as well as fostering its community service function, the University of Lahore established a fully-equipped Covid-19 Diagnostic &Treatment center at its teaching hospital (ULTH). The facility has a biosafety level-III PCR diagnostic laboratory capable of conducting 100 tests per day and issue results within 24 hours.
Based on the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines, the 84 bedded-facility has a separate passage and reception, assessment room, isolation beds, x-ray facilities, specialized equipped 10 bedded ICU with ventilators, and 14 self-contained private rooms for patients confirmed with the Coronavirus. Sufficient personal protective equipment (PPEs) including N95 masks, protective gowns and face shields are available to ensure the safety of the health workers and those coming to the centre. A team of specialized physicians, consultants, anesthetists, trained nurses and paramedical staff works around the clock to execute the required medical duties.
The Chairman BoG Mr. Awais Raoof revealed these developments on April 2, 2020 in a communiqué addressed to the University community in regard to the Covid-19 pandemic. “Your health and wellbeing is our utmost priority at this time when the entire world is troubled by this pandemic”, the communiqué reads in part. He asked the staff to inform the University in case of any detected symptoms of Coronavirus. He also declared a 50% discount on both laboratory and hospital treatment charges for all staff and their family members. Mr. Awais further assured staff of the University’s commitment towards meeting their financial needs amidst the unforeseen challenges associated with untimely closure of the academic institutions throughout the country in the wake of the pandemic.
While commenting on the centre, the ULTH Medical Superintendent (MS) Dr. Zahid Pervaiz said; “The facility meets all the international standards to combat this pandemic. The medical team is adequate and our commitment to serving humanity is central”.
