World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan estimates that 99,711 acres of land in Punjab and 27,874 acres in Sindh have been deforested in recent decades. Based on these alarming figures and sensing the danger that Pakistan is facing, Prime Minister Imran Khan launched “Clean Green Pakistan Movement” on October 8, 2018 with an aim of planting 10 billion trees throughout Pakistan.
As responsible citizens of Pakistan, and in the recognition of Prime Minister’s call, the Society of Civil Engineers attached to the Department of Civil Engineering in collaboration with Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) arranged a Climate Change Awareness Seminar and Tree Plantation Drive on October 18-19, 2019 at both Raiwind Road and Defence Road Campuses. The seminar took place at the former and tree plantation drive took place at the latter.
Mrs. Shahnaz Raoof along with Prof. Dr. Zulfiqar Ali Khan (HOD, Civil Engineering) on behalf of the UOL Management, welcomed the chief guests at the seminar Mr. Yasir Gillani (Chairman PHA) and Mr. Naddem Abbas Bara (Member, Provincial Assembly).
Mr. Gillani offered to volunteer students 200 seedlings to plant around the vicinity of the UOL’s Defense Road Campus a day after the seminar. “This volunteer plantation effort is a small contribution but a very big step towards preventing climate change,” the Society President remarked.
Mrs. Shahnaz thanked Mr. Gillani for his generous contribution and also presented shields to both Mr. Gillani and Mr. Bara and later the two guests planted a tree as a symbol of solidarity towards sustainable environment move.
