UOL Libraries uses the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system to organize books. This system arranges books according to a book’s primary subject and assign each book a unique call number used to locate the book on the shelf. This method of organizing makes it easier to find books that may fit into several majors or departments.
Each library item (book, video, DVD) has its own unique identifying number, or Call Number. This number reflects the subject of the item. A call number is like an address that gives the location where the item can be found in the library. The following will show you how to read call numbers, so you will be able to find materials in the UOL Libraries System.
Books are organized numerical order of the decimal number. For books that have the same decimal number, the second line/portion of the call number is then placed in alphabetical order.
