From October 3 to 5, 2019, The University of Lahore and the University of Health Sciences co-organized 1st International Dental Conference at Expo Center Lahore with the theme “Collaborate, Innovate and Cure”. The event was one of its kind in which private and public sector institutions collaborated to invite more than twenty-five foreign delegates and 2,300 participants who registered for this academic activity along with the dental exhibition arranged by Pakistan Dental Trade and Manufacturing Association (DTMA).
More than 25 international speakers from UK, Canada, Brazil, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi-Arabia, Sri Lanka and others attended the event. Chairman Board of Governor, Mr Awais Raoof represented The UOL in Global Dental Health & Education Alliance with nine other members, including President Dr Arif ur Rehman Alvi, Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences, Prof Javaid Akram, Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University, Prof Khalid Masud Gondal, Dr Andrew Edwards from UK and others.
The purpose of the grand alliance is to collaborate in addressing the dental needs of the society, and incorporate collective measures to handle the global burden of oral diseases. President of Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Dr Arif ur Rehman Alvi, was the chief guest and inaugurated the conference and trade exhibition. He emphasized on adoption of preventive measures to avoid Oro-Facial Diseases, rather than curative treatments. He asked all the dental fraternity to be a good compassionate healthcare provider instead of just practitioners. He also appreciated all the organizations for collaborating to hold this auspicious occasion of global exchange of knowledge and skills.
Health Minister Government of Punjab, Dr Yasmin Rashid, the Patron of the conference, emphasized that oral cavity is the route of many infections and proper oral hygiene should be maintained for an optimal general health and wellbeing. She highlighted the deficiencies in the field of Dentistry in Pakistan and how the Government is planning to improve them with the available resources. She also appreciated the arrangements of the Dental Trade Exhibition and highlighted the collaboration of The UOL which is emerging as a knowledge city in private sector.
UHS Vice Chancellor, Prof Akram said there should be separate Dental Council in developed countries. He admired the role of the UOL and acknowledged the efforts of Dean University College of Dentistry UOL, Prof Moghees A. Baig and his team for the collaboration and support in arranging this fruitful event.
The foreign speakers not only gave lectures on different topics but also conducted various workshops on Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and other fields of dentistry.
University College of Dentistry conducted a pre-conference workshop on ‘Advanced Endodontic Techniques’, conducted by Dr Haytam Abdel-Aziz and a live webinar session on ‘Surgical Correction of Facial Deformities: A Multidimensional Approach by Dr Andrew Edwards’.
Apart from the academic activities, the UOL arranged a colorful dinner for the delegates at The Poet Restaurant, located near Minar-e-Pakistan, on the first day of the event. The Patron-in-Chief, M.A. Raoof met all the foreign delegates and appreciated their efforts for the exchange of knowledge, skills and attitudes of global relevance.
The UOL also hosted “Gala Dinner” and cultural event in which the students performed cultural and musical dances from all provinces of Pakistan followed by the dinner. Shields of appreciation were distributed to the visiting delegates and the three Vice Chancellors.
