Pakistan Diet Scientists Organize Food EXPO 2019

From December 10 to 11, 2019, the UOL’s Institute of Diet and Nutritional Sciences (UIDNS) under the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) and The Pakistan Society of Food Scientists and Technologists (PSFST) jointly organized the 30th All Pakistan Food Science Conference & Food and Nutrition EXPO-2019 with the theme “Value added food products for export led growth” at the UOL’s Defence Road Campus. The event aimed at creating awareness about the food businesses and to highlight the recent trends and innovations in the domain of Food and Nutritional Sciences.
The 2-day mega event attracted around 2,000 participants while more than 70 food industries across the Pakistan set up their stalls at the expo. The conference part comprised of 15 technical sessions, two plenary sittings and one business meeting.
The event was officially inaugurated by the Minister for Food, Mr. Samiullah Chaudhary along with Mr. Sardar Hasnain Bahadur Dreshak (Minister Livestock and Dairy Development), Mr. Umar Tanveer Butt (Chairman Punjab Food Authority), Mr. Khurram Sohail Khan Leghari (Advisor to CM for food) and Prof. Dr. Masood Sadiq Butt (President PSFST). Mr. M.A. Raoof (Patron-in-Chief), Mr. Awais Raoof (Chairman BOG), Prof. Dr. Mujahid Kamran (Rector) and Prof. Dr. Syed Amir Gilani (Dean Faculty of Allied Health Sciences) were also present at the inauguration.
The Chairman BOG welcomed the guests and appreciated the efforts of the UOL for taking the lead in organizing this event. He said, “I believe that it is an excellent opportunity to highlight food and nutrition challenges and devise strategies to cope with the problems in the days to come. Consumer awareness, issues of food safety, and poor nutritional status of the masses demand attention of all stakeholders”.
The President PSFST said, “In the current world, ensuring the adequate quantity of food with the best nutritional quality is an important issue. Gatherings such as this, give us a chance to present an integrated multi-sectoral approach across the whole food supply chain that could improve the quality of food along with ensuring the highest standards of food safety and hygiene”.
The guests highlighted the importance of food and nutrition in Pakistan and congratulated the organizers for arranging the event that provided a platform for the scientific community, industrialists, academicians and students to interact on the recent developments in the domain of food and nutritional sciences.
After the inauguration ceremony, the eminent scientists from across Pakistan presented their thoughts on various issues in food and nutrition plenary sessions which were later followed by the business meeting in which representatives from the food industries provided guidelines to the students wishing to join food industries for internships.  Almost 130 researches on food and nutrition topics were presented during the 15 technical sessions.
Mr. Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan, (Minister of Punjab for information) was the chief guest at the Gala night in which students and the Musical Society of the UOL performed different cultural activities.  Mr. Chohan appreciated the learning environment of the UOL adding that, “Students are the most important stakeholders in any nation and Pakistan can only progress if students honestly take their responsibilities”. Prof. Gilani (Dean, FAHS), Prof. Dr. Ishfaq Ahmed (Associate Dean, FAHS) and Dr. Shahid Bashir (HOD, UIDNS) expressed their gratitude and congratulated the organizers for the successful arrangement of this mega event.
