Obstetrics and Gynecology Department conducts cervical cancer screening awareness seminar, inaugurates colposcopy clinic

With the aim to raise public awareness on the need for cervical cancer screening and to promote more equitable and efficient screening across the population, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University College of Medicine and Dentistry (UCMD)/University of Lahore Teaching Hospital (ULTH) organized Cervical Cancer Screening Awareness Seminar on February 1, 2021.

Prof. Dr. Mahwish Arooj (Principal, UCMD) was the chief guest of the program, whereas Prof. Dr. Tahira Rizwan (HoD Gynecology & Obstetrics), Dr. Samina Rafique (Associate Professor) and Dr. Attia Rasheed (Associate Professor) were the key speakers of the drive. The female clinical, paramedical staff and nurses at the ULTH constituted the audience of the seminar.

Dr. Rizwan presented the incidences of cervical cancer with emphasis on early detection through screening with the aim to reduce the mortality rate. “Pap test is the most important thing you can do to prevent cervical cancer. Pap test detects precancerous cells in the cervix, which can be treated before cancer ever develops. In fact, most invasive cancers are found in women who have not had regular Pap testing”, she explained.

Dr. Rasheed briefly discussed the risk factors and pathophysiology of cervical cancer which includes human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, immune system deficiency, herpes, smoking, age factor, socioeconomic factors, oral contraceptives and exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES).

Dr. Rafique discussed the screening and diagnostic tests i.e. Pap and HPV DNA tests. She said prevention is always the best approach through civic education on PHC and human papilloma virus vaccines.

The Principal, UCMD appreciated the organizing department and guest speakers for the job well-done. Her closing remarks was followed by the cake cutting ceremony and the inauguration of colposcopy clinic at ULTH. Prof. Dr. Sikander Afzal (Associate Dean, ULTH) and Prof. Dr. Farrukh Iqbal (HoD, Medicine) also attended the inauguration event. ULTH also offered free Pap smear screening to first 20 registered Participants.
