The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) registered exceptional research output on a global scale during the COVID-19 lockdown that was instituted early this year by the government of Pakistan.

In collaboration with other researchers from the University of Health Sciences (UHS), University of Management and Technology (UMT), Bahria International Hospital, King Abdul Aziz University, Saudia Arabia, University of Milan, Italy, etc., Prof. Dr. Syed Amir Gilani (Dean FAHS) and Prof. Dr. Riffat Mehboob (Professor at UIPT, Research Unit, Convener Postgraduate Research Committee, FAHS) led and co-published two researches, submitted one paper on COVID-19 and five on other biomedical subjects.

The “Future Impacts of Covid-19 Infection on Pakistani Population” and “Diagnosis and Treatment of Cytokine Storming as a Management of COVID-19 Infection” got published in Annals of King Edward Medical University, a prestigious Medical Journal recognized by both HEC and PMDC.

Aprepitant as a combinant with Dexamethasone reduces the inflammation via Neurokinin 1 Receptor Antagonism in severe to critical Covid-19 patients and potentiates respiratory recovery: A novel therapeutic approach” is the title of the paper submitted to the New England Journal of Medicine, an International top ranked journal with highest impact factor of 74. “If published, this paper will not only be a matter of pride for the University of Lahore, but also for Pakistan as a country”, Dr. Mehboob remarked while speaking to this writer.

Prof. Dr. Gilani, Prof. Dr. Mehboob, Amber Hassan (Senior Lecturer, UIPT, Research Unit, FAHS) and Humaira Waseem (Senior Lecturer, UIPT, Research Unit, FAHS) published “Immunohistochemical expression of the Alpha Nicotinic Acetylcholine receptor 7 in the human normal, diabetic, pre-eclamptic placenta and Products of Conception” and another publication entitled, Elevated Neurokinin 1-Receptor Expression in uterine products of conception is associated with first trimester Miscarriages”.  Both are published in the Frontiers in Physiology-Autonomic Neuroscience, an international renowned journal with impact factor of 3.33.

Prof. Dr. Mehboob in collaboration with three Italian scholars also published “Substantia Nigra Abnormalities Provide New Insight On The Neural Mechanisms Underlying The Sleep-Arousal Phase Dysfunctions In SIDS” in the ASN Neuro, a reputed journal of American Society for Neurochemistry with high impact of 4.16.

Diagnostic accuracy of carotid intima media thickness by B-mode ultrasonography in coronary artery disease patients” got published in the Arch Med Sci Atheroscler Dis 2020 on the credit of Prof. Dr. Nasir Raza Zaidi (University Institute of Radiological and Imaging Technologies), Prof. Dr. Gilani, Prof. Dr. Mehboob, Ms. Amber Hassan and Humaira Waseem.

Prof. Dr. Gilani and Prof. Dr. Mehboob published a Review article entitled, “Extensively Drug-Resistant (XDR) Typhoid: Evolution, Prevention, and Its Management” in Biomed Research International (IF, 2.5) in collaboration with other researchers from national universities.

“This is a great achievement for FAHS and the University at large. As many people were looking at the lockdown as a big challenge, we as scholars just took it as an opportunity to make a contribution towards fighting the pandemic. Our researches are being read and cited globally. We are therefore part of the solution to the global health challenges and in the creation of new knowledge”, Prof. Gilani remarked about this milestone.
