Department of Vision Sciences celebrates World Sight Day

World Sight Day was initiated by Sight First Campaign of Lion Club International Foundation in 2000, and is now under the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB). The day is marked annually on October 14 to raise awareness on vision impairment and preventive blindness.

In the same spirit, the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences (DOVS) on November 4-5, 2020 commemorated the Day at an event arranged at the UOL Defence Road Campus. Students, faculty members and optometrists took an active participation while Mr. Nasir Mahmood (Chief Executive Officer, Engineering Project), Ma’am Ammara Awais (Director, OSA), Prof. Dr.  Syed Amir Gilani (Dean, FAHS) and Prof. Dr. Ashfaq Ahmed (Associate Dean, FAHS) gratified the event as guests of honor.

During the event, 3D models and chart making competitions were held to raise awareness about different ocular issues and their solutions. The students from all semesters participated in the competition and portrayed the psychological impact of low vision rehabilitation, COVID -19 and its relation with eyes, awareness of different eye diseases and their treatments.

The refraction stations were also set up for free eye check-up by the senior students and hospital staff. Approximately, 280 people got their eye sight examined and were prescribed glasses to fix their refractive errors.

Dr. Muhammad Khizar Bashir (Head of Optometry and Vision Sciences Department), with other distinguished guests, visited all the stalls set up for the competition. He appreciated the efforts of students who participated in the event and encouraged them to take the profession to its height of glory.

The event ended up with prize distribution ceremony where the winners of the competition were awarded with medals and certificates.
